What Is EIFS?

Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS), also known as synthetic stucco is a multi-layered exterior finish  system that provide exterior walls with an insulated, water-resistant, finished surface in an integrated material system. This system includes a drainage cavity, which allows any and all moisture to exit the wall. EIFS with drainage typically follows the below application process:
  • An optional water-resistive barrier (WRB) that covers the substrate.
  • A drainage plane between the WRB and the insulation board that is achieved with adhesives applied over the WRB.
  • Insulation board made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) which is secured with an adhesive or mechanical fasteners  to the surface substrate.
  • Base Coat, an acrylic or polymer-based cement material that’s applied to the top of the insulation, then reinforced with glass fiber reinforcement mesh.
  • A water-resistant base coat that is applied on top of the insulation to serve as a weather barrier.
  • A  textured finish coat that is decorative and protective.
